SEO is key to your success online. In another post here I discuss the importance of using a blog to promote or brand yourself. The trick to that is to have traffic to your blog. In addition to your blog, you need to have a webpage or capture page where you can send people to that contain the product or service that you are marketing. For the same reason you need traffic to see your blog you need them to see your product website or capture page.
To get traffic to your site there are many ways, but if you are wanting to get your traffic through Google there are only two ways. One is Pay Per Click search or the paid advertising that is on the right side of the Google search page results, and the other is the organic search results which are on the left side of the page.
It is on the left side where SEO (Search Engine Optimization) comes into play. Rather than pay to get your site on the first page of Google, you need to optimize your website so that Google sees it as relevant. Being relevant will get you seen on the first page if...while you are doing it you are standing on one foot, while balancing a ball on your head and reading Shakespear. But seriously, it does seem that you have about that much control of it! You may not feel like you can do much to influence it but all you have to know is how to make Google happy.
So, what are the things that you can do for your site? I am going to talk to you about the key factors, but you have to know that this will only account for 25% of what Google is looking for.
What is Google scanning on your site?
1. The Page Title - It should focus on your keywords
2. Your URL - It should also focus on your keywords
3. Headings - You should have several
4. Text - To look for content and how the text is formatted, such as the emphasis put on bold type words etc.
5. Description - It should be relevant to the page
The biggest precentage of the Google decision is made by looking at the off site traffic back to your site. It may be a lot harder to control, however, the imporance can not be over estimated. In the beginning when Google looks at your page it assigns a score as to how relevant/important your site appears to be. Scoring starts at 0 and moves up to 10. Something that is interesting about this scales is that it is exponential, that is to say, that it is more difficult to go from 6 up to 7 than it is to go from 3 up to 4. So, the more you move up the harder it gets to keep moving up. For Google to decide to move you up or not, they are looking for what other people think of your site. The more links to you site the higher you are going to rank. To get those links you need to promote your site through other sites.
A good place to start is by finding website or blog directories. It is wise to find directories that are well maintained. Another way is to partner with other companies or sites that you do business with and have them link back to your site.
To attract back links you have to have good content on your site and have up to date information, as well as being active. We are now back to the beginning. The content on your site has to be note worthy to entice people to send back links. To show that you are active you need to write new posts, visit the web 2.0 social sites of online networking and visit forums. You could even send out a press release about an event or new product that you have.
Finally some key ideas to remember are that a keyword phrase should have it's own blog post. It is not a good idea to send all of your keyword traffic to one post. Your posts should be specific to the keyword. On your blog it is the number of pages, not the length of the post that is important. The use of flash on your blog/website is not a bad thing. However, Google does not read flash only text so it will not improve your ranking. In conclusion, hosting your site at one place versus another does not improve your ranking. There is a lot to learn and it is best to find a good resource and study it well, see below for a good place to start. Now go get optimized!!!
